Pharmacy Year One – Semester One

Goal of Semester One. To provide an orientation to the professional program and pharmaceutical care plans and to lay the basic science foundation for contemporary pharmacy practice. To begin to develop the professional communication skills of the students and to develop their initial practice skills in a community practice environment.

PHARMACY 711. Professional Orientation I. Introduction to Pharmacy Practice.

Description: The essentials necessary for the effective use of the laptop computer and the web-based class note system both in and out of the classroom. Additionally, a primer on the practice of pharmacy and professional issues.

Prerequisite: First year Doctor of Pharmacy Program standing

Semester: Fall; Credit: 2 hours

PHARMACY 712. Professional Orientation II. Top 200 Drugs, Part 1.

Description: Part-1 of an overview of the most frequently prescribed drugs (Top 200 Drugs, 1-100).

Prerequisite: First year Doctor of Pharmacy Program standing

Semester: Fall; Credit: 1 hour

PHARMACY 713. Patient Assessment I. Biological Sciences Integrated, Part 1.

Description: Part-1 of an integrated pharmaceutical sciences sequence including the principles of biochemistry, human anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, complemented by a primer on physical examination.

Prerequisite: First year Doctor of Pharmacy Program standing

Semester: Fall; Credit: 5 hours

PHARMACY 714. Pharmaceutical Care I. Principles of Pharmaceutical Care.

Description: The processes of pharmaceutical care including drug, disease, and disease management nomenclature and concepts, and the structure, development, and use of pharmaceutical care plans, as well as a primer on biomedical terminology and medical abbreviations.

Prerequisite: First year Doctor of Pharmacy Program standing

Semester: Fall; Credit: 2 hours

PHARMACY 716. Pharmacy Practice II. Biomedical Informatics.

Description: Biomedical informatics including electronic medical information retrieval and analysis and the use of patient and medical information databases. (May be taken first or second semester.)

Prerequisite: First year Doctor of Pharmacy Program standing

Semesters: Fall and Spring; Credit: 2 hours

PHARMACY 717. Practice Experience I. Early Practice Experience-1.

Description: An introductory practice experience in a community pharmacy practice setting. (May be taken first or second semester.)

Prerequisite: First year Doctor of Pharmacy Program standing

PHARMACY 718. Problem-Based Learning I. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.

Description: Case studies in critical thinking, professional ethics, and problem solving.

Prerequisite: First year Doctor of Pharmacy Program standing

Semester: Fall; Credit: 1 hour

PHARMACY 719. Professionalization I. Electronic Mentor Interaction Program.

Description: Electronic mentoring program of networking with a personal pharmacist-mentor.

Prerequisite: First year Doctor of Pharmacy Program standing

Semester: Fall; Credit: 1 hour

PHARMACY 724. Pharmaceutical Care II. Professional Communications.

Description: The processes of formal and informal professional communications, including student presentations.

Prerequisite: First year Doctor of Pharmacy Program standing

Semester: Fall; Credit: 2 hours

PHARMACY 728. Problem-Based Learning II. Patient and Interprofessional Communications.

Description: Case studies in and small group discussions of the effective use of pharmacist-patient and interprofessional communication for problem solving.

Prerequisite: First year Doctor of Pharmacy Program standing

Semester: Fall; Credit: 1 hour
